Change happens where good government and good communities intersect
Maurice's professional career has been in the sphere of regional development. He has years of experience bringing that insight to his volunteer work on task forces and commissions in different communities. Maurice is ideally qualified to create change, strengthen equity and transform Golden Valley into the future-forward, thriving community it deserves to be.
Mr. Harris understands the intersection of government, business and development. He has worked in regional development, first in Missouri and now in Minnesota, since 2012. He is currently employed as a Research Manager for Minneapolis Saint Paul Regional Economic Development Partnership. Harris has served on the City of Golden Valley Human Rights Commission since 2017 and recently completed his tenure as its chair from 2018 to 2019. He is a committee member of City of Golden Valley’s Rising TIDES Task Force and serves on the board of Minnesota CASA and Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) Minnesota. He is a 2017 graduate of Leadership Saint Paul.
Values & Vision
Maurice was raised in a working-class household in urban St. Louis, MO by an iron-worker dad, and mom who was a housekeeper for several hotels. He was the first in his family to go to college, and now holds a Master’s of Public Affairs. Maurice knows hard work and how transformation happens. Wherever he goes, Maurice builds community, adds energy, and creates momentum. He is a proven consensus-builder, strategic change-maker and a thoughtful collaborator. He also believes the time for change in Golden Valley MN is now, and is excited to get to work for our future!
Maurice believes we need to bring transparency, accountability and new energy to the council. Top priorities include creating the kind of creative housing options that other communities are exploring as a way of providing accessible housing for all residents - including those who are buying their first home, and those who wish to age in place in their home. Infrastructure and transit are also top priorities for Maurice as traffic increases and demographics and commuting needs shift. See more about Maurice's positions on the issues.
Change happens where values meet elbow grease
About this election
Golden Valley, MN has municipal elections on odd-numbered years, and there is no primary election. The five municipal elected officials include: the Mayor (four-year term) and 4 City Council members (also four-year terms). Elections for the council are staggered so that only two are up for election every two years.
In September, Maurice Harris was given the Resolution of Support from the local Democratic party organizing units: SD45 and SD46 DFL, indicating that the main DFL organizations in the municipality back Mr. Harris.
On 11/5/19, the election will be for the Mayor, and two at-large city council seats. All council seats are at-large and serve the entire city of Golden Valley. More information can be found at the city's website and on mnvotes.org.
